The Joyous Farmer takes you on a journey to an unforgiving rural wilderness and into a man’s soul...
Ratnapala is an impoverished and alcoholic farmer living in Sri Lanka's dry zone.
Having sold all his possessions to drown his sorrows, he lacks industry and motivation.
His environment is desolate and his future is bleak.
During a chance encounter with a government official, he is prescribed an experimental drug to enhance his work ethic.
At first stimulated by the pill’s unusual effect, Ratnapala soon finds himself somewhere he’d never imagined.
Filmed entirely on-location in Sri Lanka’s arid wild, The Joyous Farmer perfectly captures the land’s cruel harshness and indifference.
Taking on an evocative fable-like quality, it tells a tale of intoxication, man against nature and predetermination.
